 GitLab claims to be the largest company in the world that is completely dedicated to remote work. More than 1,300 employees are based in 65 different countries. In order for the collaboration to work anyway, the focus at GitLab is primarily on asynchronous communication. Meetings, however, are optional. In an article in the publicly available employee handbook, GitLab explains in detail how best to communicate in a remote work environment. 

For the 1,300 GitLab employees, distributed work is the norm. To ensure that this works, the GitHub competitor has also set up very special rules for Slack.
